Barnett

Murtis Sloan Barnett, age 87, a native of the Whatley community and resident of Jackson, made her earthly transition on Saturday morning, Feb. 25, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was born Jan. 12, 1936 to Ida Megs Glenn and Ned Glenn. Murtis enjoyed cooking delicious meals for her family, shopping, gardening and beautiful flowers.

Left to cherish her memories are six daughters, Rosie Tarvin of Whatley, Linda (Eugene) Thompson of Mobile, Carolyn Black of Jackson, Laura Sloan of Tuscaloosa, Wanda (Marlon) Pritchett of Walker Springs and Mavis Barnett (Bobby Pendleton) of Grove Hill; three sons, Eddie Sloan of Lakeland, Fla., John Barnett and Kelvin Barnett, both of Grove Hill; one sister, Dorothy Hicks of Mobile; 16 grandchildren and 21 greatgrandchildren; with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, John Barnett; son, Richard Calhoun; granddaughter, Ashley Thompson and eight siblings.

A graveside service was held Saturday, March 5, 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church Cemetery in Whatley.

Final life celebration was entrusted to Jackson Memorial Funeral Home.
