Clifford Mitchell joined his Heavenly Father on January 9th. He was born and lived his entire life on the family farm between Thomaston and Linden in the Hugo community. He was the third of five children of Irma Bailey and Thomas Jewett Mitchell of Thomaston. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Thomas Jewett (Tommy), James Bailey (Jamie), and Shirley Mitchell Crocker and his wife, Phebe Hinson Mitchell. He is survived by a sister, Anne Mitchell Etheredge (Cecil), and five children, Charles Clifford, Jr. (Peggy) of Auburn, AL, Dennis Bailey (Rhonda) of Port Saint Joe, FL, James Hinson (Debra) of Thomaston, AL, George Kevin of Nashville, TN, and Mary Catherine (David Green) of Birmingham, AL. He was beloved by five grandchildren Chelsea Mitchell, Haley Mitchell, Alexis Green, Lauren Green, and Luke Green and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. He graduated from Marengo County High School in Thomaston in 1942 and continued to operate his family’s farm. He began a dairy in 1946 that grew into one of the most modern all-Jersey dairies in the county. In 1947, he married Phebe Hinson of Octagon, and together, they raised 5 children.

Clifford was a pillar of the community having served the Thomaston United Methodist Church as superintendent for more than 25 years. He was active in the Marengo County Cattlemen’s Association and the Alabama Farmers Federation where he served as county president. His farm at Hugo known as the “Bailey Farm” was named an Alabama Century and Alabama Heritage Farm in 2001. He was a friend to all who knew him and went out of his way to help anyone in need. Since 1996, he hosted the extended Mitchell family for a Thanksgiving celebration at the Hugo farm. Friends and relatives come from all over the U.S. to visit and enjoy the “Hugo hospitality”.

Graveside funeral services will be held at Thomaston Cemetery on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Dunford Cole and Rev. John Evangelista officiating.
