A graveside service was held noon Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at Thatch-Mann Cemetery in Athens, with the Rev. DenTise P. Copeland officiating.
The daughter of the late Rev. F. M. Malone Sr. and Ella Will Hargrove Malone, Kelly attended Big Creek School in Limestone County. She graduated from Trinity High School in 1952. She soon moved to Louisville, Kentucky.
An early civil rights pioneer, Kelly was known for being outspoken about her beliefs for race-based social change. Kelly was employed at The Louisville Housing Opportunity Center. The HOC aimed to promote fair housing practices, secure low- and moderate-income housing, and assist minority buyers in purchasing homes outside the inner city.
In the early '80s, she relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. The Hyatt Regency Atlanta employed her in the security office. Kelly was reunited with the Rev. Hosea Williams and other veteran civil rights leaders in Atlanta working on human rights.
In 1992, she moved back to Athens when the health of her father declined.
Kelly was a member of Frazier C.M.E. Church in Athens.
She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Jerry, Willie Mack and F. M. Malone Jr.; sisters, Bertha L. Pipes and Ola R. Anderson; and brothers-in-law, Anderson Winton, C. A. Anderson Sr., Clifford Mastin and Alexander Benford.
