Margaret O. Baker, 85, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her husband and children, December 1, 2020. Margaret was born in Boaz, Alabama, to Zelma and Sam Otinger, who preceded her in death. In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her brothers, Otra Otinger, Otis Otinger, and S.J. Otinger; sisters, Evelyn Dobbins, Geneva Teal, Dot Waldrop, Marie Wier, and infant sister Mildred Otinger.
She is survived by her husband, Robert P. Baker; children, Deborah Baker (Ernie Meinecke), Bob Baker (Janet Hunt), Michael Baker (Anne), and Michelle Weathers (Jon); grandchildren, Lee Meinecke, Matthew Meinecke, Brian Nelson, and Samantha Baker; great-grandson, Cole Nelson; sisters, Eula Floater, Pauline Morton, and JoRene Kendrick; brother, Richard Otinger; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Margaret and Robert moved to Huntsville in 1962 and then to Ardmore, Tennessee, in 1974. While living in Ardmore, she helped spearhead the formation of the Ardmore Public Library. Upon moving to Athens in 2001, she became active with the Athens Garden Club, Three Arts Club, and Friends of the Library and also served on the Athens-Limestone County Library board. She was a member of several bridge groups and attended Bible study at First United Methodist Church.
Margaret and Robert loved traveling throughout the U.S, Canada, and Mexico, and she also loved the winters she and Robert spent in South Texas. Margaret was adored by family and friends and was known for making the best chocolate and pecan pies.
A private family service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Athens, Alabama. Memorial gifts may be sent to the First United Methodist Church Missions 144.
