KEYES, Jean Feb 22, 1920 – Nov 18, 2020

Jean Hightower Keyes, 100, of Limestone County, Alabama, passed away November 18, 2020, at Madison Village. She was born February 22, 1920, to Munn and Clara (Hatchett) Hightower and grew up in the Wheeler community of Limestone County.
Mrs. Keyes is survived by daughters, Carol (Mike) Doyle and Clara Keyes; grandsons, Lucas Doyle and Evan (Whitney) Doyle; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Lucas Keyes; daughter, Martha Jean Keyes; parents; sister, Sarah Hurd; and brother, Joe Hightower.
Warmly remembered by former students in Limestone County, Mrs. Keyes was a teacher for many years in area public schools and at Birdie Thornton Opportunity School. She began teaching before World War II at Belle Mina school, continued during the war to teach airmen at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, and taught women brought into the workforce to manufacture aircraft for the war effort in New Orleans. When Bill Keyes returned from duty in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, she married him and they settled in Athens to raise their family.
Mrs. Keyes will be remembered as a beloved wife, devoted mother and grandmother, loving daughter and sister, thoughtful friend to young and old, talented homemaker and gardener, and a faithful Christian and member of First Christian Church and Nebo Presbyterian Church. She was a great steward of her talents and the resources God provided so that when she reports to God, he will surely say, "Well done, good and faithful servant." She will be missed and often thought of by her family and friends.
The family wishes especially to thank the staff at Madison Village for the love and kindness they shared with Mrs. Keyes and her family. Also, a note of appreciation goes to Hospice Family Care for their skilled and compassionate support.
A graveside service will be held in December with arrangements made by McConnell Funeral Home. Donations in Mrs. Keyes' memory may be made to Birdie Thornton Center at 2305 Hine Street, Athens, AL 35611.
