COHEN, Joyce Apr 6, 1936 – Aug 11, 2020

Services for Joyce H. Cohen, 84, of Monterey, were conducted on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2020, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home. Rabbi Erin Boxt was the speaker.
Ms. Cohen was born on April 6, 1936, in Hartford, CT, to the late Julius and Anna Bronerwein Cohen. Ms. Cohen passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2020, at Standing Stone Care and Rehabilitation Center. Ms. Cohen attended the University of New Hampshire, graduating cum laude, with a B.S. in occupational therapy. Israel beckoned, so Joyce moved to a kibbutz, where she met her husband and lived for many years. Returning to the States, Joyce divorced and attended St. Joseph’s University in W. Hartford, CT, receiving her M.A. in human development and gerontology. Joyce was a member of Sigma Phi Omega, the National Academic Honor and Professional Society of Gerontology, the American Occupational Therapy Association, and the Tennessee Occupational Therapy Association. Opportunity arose and she moved to Fairfield, IA, becoming part of a transcendental meditation community, studying under Deepak Chopra. She taught primordial sound meditation as a TM specialist.
Joyce later moved to Clarksville, TN, then to Fairfield Glade, where she resided for more than 20 years. She belonged to the Plateau Writers Group, publishing several articles and a short story, “Tommy’s Vacation.” She enjoyed putting on her red and purple, as she lunched with the Red Hat ladies. With religion being important to her, Joyce was a member of the Upper Cumberland Jewish Community.
She was survived by her brother, Ernest Cohen of Connecticut; two nieces; one nephew; special friend, Janet Portnow of West Palm Beach, FL; and many close friends and neighbors. Arrangements and care provided by D.M. Goff Funeral Home, Inc., 205 East Cleveland Avenue, Monterey, TN 38574; phone 931-839-2311.
